Episode 17: Tre and LaTanya – living with arthrogryposis and autism

Episode 17 Transcript

LaTanya and her husband Greg had two miscarriages before having their son, Tre. When he was born, it became clear there were issues and he was diagnosed with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, which meant that some of his joints didn’t move as they should.

When Tre was seven he was also diagnosed with autism, and LaTanya and Greg’s focused changed from his earlier medical needs to helping him make his way in the world.

When Tre was still young LaTanya and Greg lost a second son due to a different rare genetic disorder when he was just hours old. They went on to have a third son, Quinton.

During their journey, LaTanya wrote a book “The Birth of an Advocate – How my son helped me find my voice” which tells the story of Tre’s first year and offers advice and guidance to people who find themselves acting as a carer for a loved one.

You can find her book here.

Latanya and I have known each other for 20 years. She is an amazing woman. Her faith has molded her and allowed her to be the best parent/advocate for Tre and countless other children. Bonnie, I pray that you find faith. It’s like having supernatural powers.

I listened to this podcast in pure amazement of your strength but more importantly your faith. I know that if I have your faith in just the size of a mustard seed that I can accomplish anything in my life as nothing that I have faced to date has been anywhere near what you and your family have experienced! I pray for your continued faith and Tre’s continued porgress! Can’t wait to finally meet Mr. Mayor!

This is an incredibly inspirational story. As a parent of a child on the Autism Spectrum, I could personally relate to being an advocate for your child. When faith is a constant, anything is possible! Thanks again for sharing.
